Ticket for Volpone

Sooze: ‘Amanda got me a £5 ticket to Volpone in the Swan. This is the first time I’ve made it through an RSC show without bailing out in the interval for… ooh, years. Henry Goodman, paying the eponymous Volpone was excellent – bags of energy, charisma and range. Also stand-out for me was Miles Richardson, a regular at the RSC, and far above the rest of the cast in terms of speaking. It was like he was giving them a masterclass. Anyway, the show itself ain’t no Shakespeare. Nothing moving/profound/clever. When the show contains a eunuch, a hermaphrodite and a dwarf, you know you’re not in for a cerebral experience…’
